Ladakh Marathon
2013
Leh isn’t boring – even after the season. In the beginning of September there is annual Ladakh Marathon going on (www.ladakhmaraton.com) – really popular race among locals – Run for Green and Clean Ladakh. Fortunately we were able to start in this year edition. In four-person team on 8th of September we managed to run 10 km, and all of that above 3600 m!
Tournament is organised by RIMO EXPEDITIONS (www.rimoexpeditions.com) with cooperation with Tourist Department and Indian Mountaineering Foundation. You can run one of several distances – classic marathon, half-marathon, ultra-marathon to the Khardong La pass (5602 m n.p.m), and the shortest distance – 10 km. The starting point was Shanti Stupa situated above the city. Locals are running for free (because of that there were many kids walking the distance), we as foreigners had to pay 1500 INR (about 80 PLN – but there was sport shirt included in this price). Marathon was organized in typical Indian style – some people started running too early, some were using shortcuts locals only knew, we didn’t know till the end if we’re running the correct route and when we reach the finish line ;).
Even nobody of us did beat his life score (some of us were running in sandals, for some it was the first long run in the life), it was a good opportunity to test your body on such a high altitude, and – of course – feel the climate of sport event organized in Himalaya!
